Parking in Downtown Manchester: A Survival Guide

Visitors, locals, and first-timers alike — downtown parking in Manchester can feel like its own little adventure. But don’t panic. With a few insider tips from Diz’s, you can skip the stress and get straight to good food, good company, and not circling blocks forever.

1. Know Your Options: On-Street, Off-Street, Garages & Permits

On-Street (Metered) Parking

  • Downtown has metered spots with time limits (2-hour, 10-hour, etc.).
  • You can pay via Passport Parking or PayByPhone apps. manchesternh.gov
  • Pro tip: If your license plate has a special character (e.g. “#” or “-”), Passport may misread it. To avoid ticket issues, use PayByPhone in those cases. manchesternh.gov

Off-Street Lots & Garages

  • There are city-managed lots and garages.
  • These often allow longer stays and may be cheaper per hour if you’re going to be around for a while.
  • Keep an eye on signage — some require permits; others are open to the public.

Permits & Overnight / Long-Stay

  • If you have repeated downtown visits (e.g. employees, long-term visitors), there are permit options through the Parking Division. manchesternh.gov
  • Be cautious of booting / immobilization (“Barnacle”) if you have multiple unpaid tickets (3+ totaling $100+). The city uses a “Barnacle” device and there’s a pay-and-release system. manchesternh.gov

2. Smart Strategies to Beat the Parking Crunch

Go off-Elm when you can
Elm Street is prime, visible, and busy — it’s tempting, but also harder to snag a spot. If you’re okay with a short walk (or squeezing through), side streets are your friend.

Use “cut-through” alleys & side streets
From Franklin Street, cut through Cat Alley (aka Dean Ave) or cut-through City Hall Plaza to the other side of Diz’s. More about that in Diz’s where to park blog.

Middle Street 10-hour parking
This lane is a sleeper pick. It allows you to park longer, and it’s not far from Elm by foot.

Weekend & Sunday perks

  • On Sundays: parking is free downtown (no meter, no pay). Diz’s Cafe
  • On Saturdays: many parking spots are free except Elm and certain main side streets. Watch the meter signs carefully. Diz’s Cafe

3. Pay Smart: Apps, Kiosks, & What to Avoid

Apps first, coins second

  • The Passport Parking app is the main one used downtown. manchesternh.gov+1
  • But: if your plate has “special characters,” Passport may misread. In that case, switch to PayByPhone. manchesternh.gov
  • Always double-check your plate number, zone, and time in the app.

Meter / Kiosk backups
Have change or use credit/debit at kiosks. If your app fails, this is your fallback.

Appealing tickets & boot risk

  • If you believe a ticket was unfair, you can fill out the Citation Review Form. manchesternh.gov
  • Be aware: unpaid tickets accumulate. Three or more, totaling $100+? You risk a boot. manchesternh.gov

4. Quick Guide: Where to Park (Near Diz’s)

Option Distance / Walk Time Limit / Notes Best For
Side-streets off Elm (Franklin, etc.) ~1–3 min walk Metered / 2- or 10-hour Short meals, quick errands
Middle Street 10-hour zone ~3–5 min walk Longer stay Dinner, long visits
City lots & garages a few blocks walking Varies (permits, hourly) Full-day stays, events
Saturday / Sunday freebies All across downtown Check signage Weekend brunch, errands

5. Tips to Save Time & Stress

  • Arrive a little earlier than you think you might — securing parking is part of your “pre-dinner mission.”
  • Use your phone’s maps & “parked car” memory to mark where you left off (especially in large lots).
  • If you’re running late, you might Order Ahead at Diz’s (or via DoorDash) and park somewhere less ideal — but secure — so you can eat on time.
  • Stay updated: rules change (especially in winter with snow / snow emergencies) — keep tabs on the Manchester Parking Department site. manchesternh.gov
